As President Trump continues to impact firefighting resources in California, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the availability of $135 million for new and ongoing projects aimed at protecting communities from catastrophic wildfires. The funding is part of CAL FIRE’s Wildfire Prevention Grants Program, which supports local projects focusing on hazardous fuels reduction, wildfire prevention planning, and education.

This announcement follows a previous allocation of $72 million for forest health projects across the state. These efforts are part of a broader $2.5 billion investment in wildfire prevention since Governor Newsom took office.

The situation is compounded by the California National Guard's Task Force Rattlesnake operating at 40% capacity due to what has been described as "President Trump’s illegal militarization of Los Angeles." Additionally, cuts to the U.S. Forest Service by the Trump administration have raised concerns about community safety.

Governor Newsom stated, “We won’t let Trump stand in the way of protecting Californians from catastrophic wildfire. We’re making millions more available to fund projects that are proven to keep communities safe.”

Chief Daniel Berlant, California State Fire Marshal, highlighted the effectiveness of CAL FIRE’s grants: “These examples demonstrate how grant funds are effectively helping to improve wildfire resilience in California communities through thoughtful planning and preventative work funded through CAL FIRE grants.” Over $500 million has been awarded to over 490 projects statewide over the last five years.

Despite challenges posed by federal actions, California remains committed to enhancing its wildfire readiness. This includes expanding CAL FIRE's workforce significantly over recent years and fast-tracking vegetation management projects under new initiatives introduced by Governor Newsom.

In addition to these measures, Governor Newsom recently announced that a second C-130 Hercules airtanker is ready for operations, further strengthening what is described as the largest aerial firefighting fleet globally.
