Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta have successfully secured an emergency restraining order to block President Trump's efforts to militarize Los Angeles by taking control of the California National Guard. The court's decision is seen as a victory for maintaining democratic principles and preventing what Newsom described as a dangerous move towards authoritarianism.

"Our success today in court is a win for all Americans. The President’s action to turn the military against its own citizens threatened our democracy and moved us dangerously close to authoritarianism. We will continue to stand up for our democracy and the rights of all Americans. The country is watching," stated Governor Gavin Newsom.

The legal battle began after President Trump declared the federalization of 2,000 California National Guard members following protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Los Angeles. This move was made without Governor Newsom's consent, violating federal law which requires such approval from state governors.

The lawsuit filed by Governor Newsom challenges President Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the Department of Defense on constitutional grounds. It argues that the takeover infringes upon state sovereignty and violates Title 10 authority which mandates gubernatorial consent for National Guard federalization.

President Trump's memorandum authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard personnel into federal service for 60 days, citing a "form of rebellion" against U.S. government authority. This has raised concerns about state sovereignty nationwide as it suggests potential federal control over any state militia.

Additionally, there are allegations that the Department of Defense expanded Cal Guard duties unlawfully by involving them in civilian law enforcement activities alongside ICE agents—a violation of constitutional rights according to critics.

Local law enforcement has been working alongside additional officers deployed by the state to manage public safety amidst growing protests following federal intervention. Critics argue that these actions have led to unnecessary chaos and resource diversion in Los Angeles.

In response to President Trump's actions, which contrast with his previous stance on not federalizing National Guard members without governor approval, local authorities have had to take measures to maintain order while addressing community concerns about militarization.
