California strengthens public safety with over 300 new graduates

The state of California has recently bolstered its public safety force with the graduation of 339 individuals from key departments. Governor Gavin Newsom extended his congratulations to graduates from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), and the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

These newly graduated firefighters, correctional officers, and highway patrol officers are set to join their colleagues across the state. "Thank you for answering the call to serve our great state," stated Governor Newsom.

CAL FIRE celebrated 38 new Company Officer Academy graduates who will supervise firefighters as CAL FIRE Company Officers. These leaders have undergone extensive training in various emergency management disciplines. CAL FIRE Chief/Director Joe Tyler remarked, “Graduations are a time to come together with family, friends, and coworkers to celebrate the hard work our Company Officers have put in over the past six weeks."

In addition, 42 students completed the Emergency Command Center Academy this year, enhancing CAL FIRE’s emergency response capabilities. This brings CAL FIRE's total number of Company Officers to over 4,150.

Meanwhile, CDCR saw 168 cadets graduate from their Basic Correctional Officer Academy after an intensive 13-week program. CDCR Secretary Jeff Macomber emphasized the importance of professionalism and dedication among these new officers.

The CHP also welcomed 133 new officers who completed rigorous training at their West Sacramento Academy. These officers are now assigned to one of CHP’s Area offices throughout California. CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee commented on their commitment to public safety: “This graduation marks the beginning of a commitment to protecting and serving others."

Currently, nearly 300 cadets continue their training at West Sacramento with more scheduled for upcoming instruction as part of ongoing efforts by CHP.
