Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 2025 as "Jewish American Heritage Month" in California. In his proclamation, Newsom highlighted the significant contributions of Jewish Americans to the state and the nation. He noted that California hosts the second-largest Jewish population in the United States, with vibrant communities contributing to various sectors such as culture, politics, and civil society.

Newsom acknowledged the historical role of Jewish Californians in social movements, particularly in civil rights through organizations like the Los Angeles and Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Councils. He also mentioned film producer Carl Laemmle's influence on the film industry by producing over 400 films including "Dracula" and "The Phantom of the Opera."

The proclamation also addressed ongoing challenges faced by Jewish communities, noting persistent antisemitism. The Governor emphasized California's efforts to combat hate through education and security measures. This includes a report from the Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education on genocide education status in California, recommendations for recognizing antisemitism, and initiatives like California’s first plan to counter antisemitism.

Furthermore, Newsom highlighted investments aimed at increasing security at places of worship and cultural centers at risk. Programs have been funded to combat intolerance and support victims while launching a statewide resource line for reporting hate acts anonymously.

Governor Newsom concluded by urging Californians to celebrate Jewish contributions to the state's history while reaffirming commitments to pluralism, cultural diversity, and religious freedom.
