California declares May 2025 as Jewish American Heritage Month

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 2025 as "Jewish American Heritage Month" in California. He also mentioned film producer Carl Laemmle's influence on the film industry by producing over 400 films including "Dracula" and "The Phantom of the Opera."

The proclamation also addressed ongoing challenges faced by Jewish communities, noting persistent antisemitism. The Governor emphasized California's efforts to combat hate through education and security measures. This includes a report from the Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education on genocide education status in California, recommendations for recognizing antisemitism, and initiatives like California’s first plan to counter antisemitism.

Furthermore, Newsom highlighted investments aimed at increasing security at places of worship and cultural centers at risk. Programs have been funded to combat intolerance and support victims while launching a statewide resource line for reporting hate acts anonymously.
