Today, Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-03) expressed his opposition to the budget bill passed by Trump and House Republicans. Garamendi voted against the bill, describing it as "the biggest theft in U.S. history" due to its impact on wealth distribution.

According to Garamendi, the budget reconciliation bill represents a significant transfer of wealth from vulnerable populations to the wealthiest individuals. He highlighted that this occurs amidst rising prices caused by what he referred to as "Trump Tariffs." The congressman stated that the legislation would make life more challenging for millions of Americans by removing healthcare access for nearly 14 million Medicaid beneficiaries, including 300,000 in his district.

Garamendi criticized the bill for cutting funding for school meals affecting over 18 million children and reallocating $150 billion to projects he considers wasteful and dangerous. These include mass deportation flights and military initiatives like the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile and Trump's Golden Dome project. He pointed out that these measures do not offset their costs but would instead increase the national debt by $5 trillion.

He quoted Franklin D. Roosevelt: "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little," asserting that the bill contradicts this principle. According to Garamendi, data from the Congressional Budget Office shows that while it would raise incomes for the top 10% wealthiest Americans, it would decrease incomes for the poorest 10%. Furthermore, essential programs like Medicare, SNAP, and Head Start face significant cuts.

Garamendi condemned Republican lawmakers who supported a measure he believes harms their constituents in favor of Donald Trump. He praised his Democratic colleagues' efforts to oppose what he terms a disaster and expressed confidence that if Democrats controlled Congress, they would focus on policies aimed at raising wages and reducing costs for working Americans rather than providing benefits to wealthy donors.
