Since the launch of joint law enforcement efforts in Bakersfield, Oakland, and San Bernardino, significant progress has been made in crime reduction across California. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that these operations have resulted in 6,727 arrests, recovery of 4,842 stolen vehicles, and confiscation of 313 illicit firearms.
The initiative began under Governor Newsom's direction through partnerships among state, county, and city authorities. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) intensified its presence in high-crime areas starting in 2024 to curb roadway violence and criminal activity.
Governor Newsom stated: "I am proud of the CHP Officers, who continue to serve their communities, deter crime, and hold bad actors accountable. Their partnership with local law enforcement has helped to bring a sense of safety to communities across the state and exemplifies California’s commitment to putting the public’s safety first."
In Bakersfield, since April 2024, the joint operation led to 3,315 arrests including 680 felony arrests. Officials recovered 1,174 stolen vehicles and seized 87 firearms. The city experienced a notable decrease in crime rates with a reported drop of 57% in homicides and a reduction of shootings by 60% compared to previous years.
Oakland saw a comprehensive reduction in crime by the end of 2024 with an overall decline of 34%. Data from January to December showed significant decreases: robbery down by 25%, burglary nearly halved at almost 50%, and motor vehicle theft reduced by one-third year-over-year. The joint efforts since February resulted in over two thousand arrests and recovery of more than three thousand stolen vehicles.
San Bernardino's collaboration began in October 2024 focusing on property theft and violent crime. CHP officers arrested over a thousand individuals including nearly two hundred fifty for felonies. Advanced technology aids such as high-tech camera networks have enhanced law enforcement capabilities leading to real-time alerts on suspicious vehicle movements.
According to analysis by the Public Policy Institute of California using Real Time Crime Index data for last year compared to pre-pandemic levels: property crime dropped by about eight percent while violent crime decreased by approximately five percent; burglary fell over thirteen percent; larceny declined nearly nineteen percent.
The state has invested significantly since 2019—over $1 billion—in initiatives aimed at fighting crime which includes hiring more police officers across local governments as part of its Public Safety Plan introduced back in late-2023 featuring proactive operations targeting organized retail crimes specifically increasing efforts annually threefold-plus statewide enhancing overall community security measures implemented therein forward-looking policies enacted thereof thereafter accordingly likewise therein beyond per se altogether entirely fundamentally completely ultimately effectively
