California progresses with major restoration effort at Salton Sea

The state of California has reached a significant milestone in its efforts to restore the Salton Sea. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that water has been introduced into the East Pond Expansion, marking a crucial phase in habitat restoration as part of the Species Conservation Habitat Project. This initiative is integral to California's 10-year plan aimed at creating sustainable environments for local wildlife and improving air quality by mitigating dust from the exposed lakebed.

Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of this development, stating, "Today marks a major step in California’s environmental leadership – breathing life into critical ecosystems while creating cleaner air for communities around the Salton Sea."

The shrinking of the Salton Sea, due to reduced inflows, has led to an exposed lakebed which poses a risk to air quality in the Imperial Valley. The increased salinity also affects wildlife habitats, particularly those used by birds along the Pacific flyway.

California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot highlighted the significance of this project: “Filling the East Pond Expansion represents a major step forward in our commitment to the Salton Sea region.”

State Water Board Chair E. Joaquin Esquivel added that these efforts are vital for both ecological and economic health in nearby valleys: “These habitat restoration efforts help suppress dust from the exposed lakebed while protecting the Pacific Flyway.”

Originally envisioned as a 4,100-acre project costing approximately $200 million primarily funded through bonds, recent federal commitments have allowed it to expand significantly. The Species Conservation Habitat Project now covers over 9,000 acres.

Today's milestone follows other initiatives under Governor Newsom's administration focused on enhancing wetland habitats and improving public health and environmental conditions at the Salton Sea. The overall project aims to support diverse ecosystems and reduce airborne dust through engineered ponds and water delivery systems designed for fish and bird populations.

The groundbreaking for this expansion took place last October. As more components are completed, approximately 2,000 acres will soon be operational.
