State and local law enforcement agencies have conducted a significant operation targeting illegal cannabis activities in California's Central Valley. The Unified Cannabis Enforcement Task Force executed the operation, which resulted in the seizure of 105,700 illicit cannabis plants and 22,057 pounds of processed cannabis valued at $123.5 million.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the state's stance against illegal cannabis cultivation, stating, "Let this be a reminder to all who grow cannabis illegally: we won’t tolerate the undermining of our legal industry and impacts to our environment."

During the week of May 5, 2025, over 200 officers from various state, local, and federal agencies coordinated search warrants across Kern, Kings, and Tulare counties. A total of 71 search warrants were served with several arrests made. Nine firearms were confiscated during the operation.

Charlton H. Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife said: “This operation represents the power of collaboration across agencies with a shared commitment to protecting our natural resources and preserving the integrity of California’s legal cannabis market.”

Evidence of banned or restricted pesticides was discovered at eight locations posing environmental threats and health risks to consumers.

Nicole Elliott from the Department of Cannabis Control remarked: “This operation sends a clear message: California will not tolerate illicit cannabis activity that threatens public safety, the environment, and the integrity of the legal market.”

The recent action builds on previous efforts by seizing $534 million worth in 2024 alone. Since its inception in 2022 under Governor Newsom's guidance, over $650 million in unlicensed cannabis has been seized.

Participating partners included multiple state departments such as Corrections and Rehabilitation as well as national bodies like U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The task force has contributed significantly towards maintaining compliance within California’s regulated market – regarded globally for fostering economic growth alongside environmental stewardship through compliant practices.
