California continues SUN Bucks program to aid children during summer 2025

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the continuation of the SUN Bucks food program in California for summer 2025. Building on its initial launch in 2024, the program aims to address child hunger during the months when school meals are unavailable. Starting in June, over 4 million children in California will automatically receive electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards with $120 in food benefits.

"It’s absolutely essential that no kid in California go hungry – especially during the summer months when school meals aren’t available. We’re proud to administer the SUN Bucks program and lead the nation in beating childhood hunger," said Governor Newsom.

First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom added, "No child should go hungry just because school is out. SUN Bucks ensures California’s kids, especially those from our most vulnerable communities, have access to the nourishment they need to grow, learn, and thrive year-round. This is about dignity and the health of our children, and I’m proud that California continues to lead the nation in putting children’s well-being first."

Eligibility for SUN Bucks is primarily automatic for children receiving free or reduced-price meals, CalFresh benefits, or other specified assistance. Children in foster care, those experiencing homelessness, and those attending Head Start programs are also automatically eligible. California's Department of Social Services (CDSS) and the Department of Education have collaborated to simplify the enrollment process.

CDSS Director Jennifer Troia expressed optimism about the program's return: "We’re excited to see SUN Bucks return for the summer of 2025. Last year, this program not only helped put food on the table for millions of California families but it also bolstered local economies where food benefits were spent."

The SUN Bucks EBT cards are scheduled for distribution in two stages, beginning in early June. Stage one covers automatically enrolled children, while stage two will cater to additional eligible children as determined by ongoing applications.

The SUN Bucks initiative is part of broader state efforts, including the Universal Meals Program and the California Farm to School initiative, to ensure children have access to healthy meals year-round. Newsom highlighted key legislative actions aimed at increasing food program accessibility and improving nutritional standards for California's youth.

This initiative aligns with the federal Summer EBT program established by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, reaffirming California's commitment to tackling food insecurity.
