The DMV Oakland Coliseum office located at 501 85th Ave. has been temporarily closed following extensive vandalism-induced damage. The office closure is expected to last between four and five months as repairs are made, with customers directed to alternate DMV locations.

The damage was discovered on April 14 when staff found a leaking water pipe in the ceiling, resulting in flooding. It was also determined that the facility was subject to theft, including stolen wiring, which disrupted electricity to the HVAC system and outdoor lights. Law enforcement has been informed.

"The health and safety of team members and customers is the DMV’s top priority. The department apologizes for any inconvenience the closure has caused."

Staff from the Oakland Coliseum office have been moved to nearby DMV offices. Customers who had scheduled driving tests are being redirected to the DMV's Oakland office at 5300 Claremont Ave, roughly 10 miles away. Meanwhile, all other DMV-related transactions are being managed at the Oakland Claremont location and the Hayward office at 150 Jackson St., also 10 miles away.

The DMV advises customers to utilize its online services, as many common tasks do not require in-person visits. The DMV's digital platforms allow for tasks such as driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Further guidance on digital services is available through the DMV's Service Advisor tool on its website.

Customers interested in receiving paperless notices for registrations and renewals can opt in by creating a secure account on the DMV website.
