John Garamendi Congressman California’s Eighth Congressional District | US Congressman John Garamendi
U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) has issued a critical statement following the passage of the Continuing Resolution backed by Congressional Republicans.
According to Garamendi, “Congressional Republicans have just granted Donald Trump and Elon Musk free rein to unconstitutionally fund the government as they please and execute their agenda to dismantle critical services that millions depend on.” He outlines concerns over the failure of the bill to secure necessary funding for veteran care and life-saving healthcare programs, stating that the resolution falls short of providing $23 billion needed for veterans exposed to burn pits and toxic substances. Additionally, it cuts funds for affordable housing, potentially affecting over 32,000 veterans, domestic violence survivors, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Garamendi also criticizes the lack of disaster aid relief for Californians affected by the Palisade fires. He further points to potential economic impacts resulting from a trade war initiated by Donald Trump, which could increase the cost of essentials such as food and gas. In his words, “As Donald Trump starts a trade war that will raise the cost of food, gas, and housing, Congressional Republicans prove that they don’t care about improving your quality of life.”
Garamendi argues that Republican actions reflect an extreme agenda driven by Trump’s interests, suggesting that their decisions lack bipartisan cooperation. He believes that under Democratic leadership, legislation would aim to protect vulnerable groups and prevent figures like Musk from exerting undue influence, asserting, “If Democrats were in control, we would pass legislation that would protect our veterans, seniors, and children - and we certainly wouldn’t allow unelected billionaires like Musk from running our government to the ground.”
