The Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) and the City of Los Angeles have announced the distribution of the first round of grants for the LA Region Small Business and Worker Relief Funds. The initiative, aimed at providing direct cash assistance to those impacted by recent fires, has allocated $2.7 million to 82 businesses and 324 workers. This initial funding includes support for businesses and nonprofits with physical locations destroyed in the fires.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the importance of small businesses to both the economy and communities, stating: “We know that small businesses are not only key to a thriving economy but also make up the heart of healthy communities, and we’re committed to doing everything in our power to help them rise and rebuild. We applaud the City and County of Los Angeles for getting these critical funds out the door as quickly as possible to protect and support the businesses and workers that have been most impacted.”

The relief efforts are backed by a $10 million investment from multiple sources including the State of California, Maersk, APM Terminals, and LA Rises. LA Rises is spearheaded by Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter, business leader Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and Casey Wasserman. An additional $15.9 million is expected to be awarded later this month as part of this unified recovery effort launched by Governor Newsom in January.

To further address unmet needs, donations can be made at lacounty.gov/relief.

Governor Newsom's commitment to economic recovery was further demonstrated last month during his visit to Los Angeles where he introduced the California Jobs First Economic Blueprint. This plan includes $125 million for new projects ready for implementation along with $15 million designated for economic development initiatives benefiting California Native American tribes.

Additionally, Governor Newsom received a regional plan from the Los Angeles Jobs First Collaborative which included an announcement of $3 million towards supporting regional recovery efforts through public campaigns promoting small business support.

In response to requests from Governor Newsom, federal assistance deadlines have been extended by FEMA for survivors of Los Angeles fires. The new deadline for applying for FEMA Individual Assistance or Small Business Administration aid is March 31, 2025. These programs aim to provide financial help along with other resources necessary for wildfire recovery efforts.
