Protecting American Consumers Together (PACT) has announced the launch of a seven-figure advertising campaign in Georgia aimed at supporting legal reforms to address lawsuit abuse. The initiative, funded by Uber, was detailed in a press release on January 29.
According to PACT, the organization is embarking on a nationwide campaign to tackle predatory legal practices, beginning with a significant ad purchase in Georgia. This effort supports legislative measures intended to curb lawsuit abuse. PACT has committed over $10 million towards television, digital, and print advertisements, alongside educational initiatives and policy advocacy focused on consumer protection and transparency within the legal system. The organization's efforts will emphasize the consequences of exploitative personal injury practices while advocating for sensible legal reforms.
Bloomberg reports that Uber has joined forces with the Protecting American Consumers coalition, which includes Waffle House Inc., to push for legal reforms targeting these predatory practices. The coalition plans to spend more than $10 million in 2025, starting with a marketing campaign in Georgia that aligns with Governor Brian Kemp’s objectives to reduce insurance rates.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) states that Georgia's tort costs reached $20 billion in 2022, representing 2.60% of the state's GDP. These costs averaged $5,050 per household and encompassed settlements, legal fees, and other related expenses.
Governor Brian Kemp is endorsing Senate Bill 68, a tort reform measure designed to decrease lawsuit abuse and associated legal costs within the state. The bill proposes changes such as premises liability reform, truth in medical damages, seatbelt admissibility in auto accident cases, and restrictions on plaintiffs’ attorneys suggesting large damage amounts to juries. It also introduces trial bifurcation—requiring liability determination before considering damages—and eliminates double recovery of attorney fees. Following extensive discussion, the bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee with an 8-3 vote as part of Kemp’s broader agenda for legal system reforms.
