Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed January 29, 2025, as Lunar New Year in California. In his proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the significance of this holiday and its celebration by people across the country and worldwide.
The proclamation highlights the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities to California's history and future. Governor Newsom acknowledged both the achievements and challenges faced by these communities, noting "the ugly history of violence and discrimination against these communities" while calling for a collective effort to confront racism.
California recognizes Lunar New Year as an official state holiday for the third year. The governor invited all Californians to appreciate the traditions associated with this celebration. He also paid tribute to those affected by the Monterey Park tragedy two years ago, honoring their memory and supporting survivors.
"As the Year of the Snake begins," Governor Newsom expressed wishes for "happiness and good fortune to all." He urged residents to show support for AAPI friends, family, and neighbors while recognizing their vital role in California's story.
