Ryan K. Buchanan, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia has reported collections and forfeitures exceeding $72 million for Fiscal Year 2024. Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. emphasized the importance of financial justice, stating, "Obtaining financial justice for victims of crime and United States taxpayers is a high priority for this District." He added that these results reflect their commitment to using both criminal and civil enforcement to recover funds for crime victims and the public.

The office collected over $36 million through its Financial Litigation Program, which manages civil and criminal debts, fines, and penalties owed to crime victims and the United States. This includes more than $14 million in restitution, fines, or assessments from defendants in criminal cases. Federal law mandates restitution payments by defendants who commit certain crimes, with criminal fines contributing to the Department of Justice’s Crime Victims Fund.

In affirmative civil enforcement cases, over $21 million was collected by recovering government funds lost due to fraud or misconduct or collecting fines from violations of federal laws.

Additionally, more than $36 million was deposited into various forfeiture funds through actions managed by the Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section. This includes over $21 million from civil forfeiture cases and more than $14 million from criminal cases. The Department of Justice uses these proceeds to compensate crime victims and support law enforcement activities.
