John Reichart, a 72-year-old U.S. Marine veteran from Indianola, Iowa, has found a unique way to bring joy to his wife Joan during the Christmas season as she battles Alzheimer's disease. For two months, Reichart dedicated himself to transforming his entire neighborhood into a festive wonderland. This initiative was sparked when Joan asked about Christmas decorations, prompting Reichart to take action.

Reichart shared with The Washington Post that the idea emerged three months ago after Joan's inquiry about the decorations. "I hadn’t done much holiday decorating since we moved back because I’d been working so hard to look after her and keep her happy," he explained. Inspired by this moment, he decided it was time for a grand display of lights and ornaments.

The plan began with asking each neighbor for permission to decorate their lawns and properties. Initially simple in concept—just a single lighted tree per lawn—the project expanded significantly as Reichart added LED lights and various ornaments like snowmen and tiny dogs across all 18 homes on his street.

To accomplish this feat, Reichart used his electric wheelchair to transport supplies from house to house, conducting much of the installation himself before enlisting professional help for more complex displays. He also worked closely with neighbors to ensure their personal styles were reflected in the decorations.

Reichart expressed that despite spending thousands on decorations, “every dime was well spent.” His efforts have drawn attention from visitors who drive through nightly to view the illuminated street. Many stop by Reichart's garage where he sits with hot chocolate ready to greet them.

Joan has responded positively to the festive environment: “Joan doesn’t speak much now, but she tells me the lights are pretty,” said Reichart. They often sit together in their garage enjoying the spectacle as cars pass by.

In addition to brightening up their neighborhood, one neighbor initiated a fundraiser supporting Reichart’s efforts while encouraging others worldwide to send notes of encouragement through a P.O. Box set up specifically for this purpose.
