America's first solar-powered community, Babcock Ranch in Punta Gorda, Florida, is gaining attention for its energy efficiency and resilience to natural disasters. The community remained unscathed during Hurricane Milton, retaining power while many others experienced outages.
Located 15 miles from Fort Myers, Babcock Ranch features an 880-acre solar field at the Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center. Its central hub, Founder's Square, offers solar trees for device charging. Homes in the area meet a minimum Bronze Standard FGBC Certification with various energy-saving features like high-performance windows and efficient appliances.
Jason Upperco, a resident of Babcock Ranch, expressed satisfaction with his choice to live there: "It’s very important to know that you are having a positive impact on the Earth." Janette Dulaney shared her experience with lower utility costs compared to her previous home despite increased square footage.
The homes are designed to withstand severe weather conditions and are built inland and above sea level to reduce storm surge risks. About 90% of the community is on preserved wetland areas that manage excess water naturally. Smart Pond systems further enhance flood prevention by adjusting water levels based on weather forecasts.
Syd Kitson, co-founder of Babcock Ranch and former NFL player, emphasizes their mission: “We are on a mission to build the most innovative, resilient, and climate-resilient town in America.” His vision began after retiring from professional football when he established a real estate development company focused on sustainable communities.
In 2006, Kitson's team acquired land in Southwest Florida and later sold part back to the state for preservation. His efforts earned him Time magazine's "Dreamer of the Year" title in 2023. Kitson hopes Babcock Ranch serves as an inspiration for other communities worldwide.
Babcock Ranch promotes activities that encourage residents to minimize their carbon footprint through local engagement options like concerts and farmers markets at Founder's Square. The neighborhood also provides recreational facilities such as lakes for water sports and lodges with swimming pools.
Upperco believes similar communities should be developed nationwide: “This town should be duplicated all over.”
