WellCare of Kentucky has awarded a $20,000 grant to Owen County Public Transit (OCPT) to help expand transportation services for rural residents in Northern Kentucky. The funding aims to address barriers that prevent people from accessing medical care and other essential services.

In spring 2024, WellCare and the Golden Triangle Rural Health Network established a community impact council focused on identifying gaps in resources for rural communities. After several months of meetings, the council determined that lack of transportation was one of the main challenges facing residents who need to travel for medical appointments.

Based on the council’s recommendation, WellCare provided OCPT with $20,000 in November 2025. The expansion will allow more rural residents access to healthcare facilities located in nearby cities.

Dan Brenyo, Administrator at Owen County Public Transit, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to WellCare of Kentucky for this grant and to the community leaders and organizations who highlighted the need to expand transportation services in our region. With this investment, OCPT is better positioned to improve the health and quality of life of even more people in these counties.”

OCPT offers low-cost public transportation not covered by Medicaid or other insurance programs. It serves qualifying residents across Owen, Gallatin, Carroll, Grant, Boone, Kenton, Campbell, and Pendleton counties. In some areas such as Owen, Gallatin, Grant, Carroll, and Pendleton counties, OCPT is the only available public transit option.

“Lack of transportation is a significant barrier for so many across Kentucky,” said Corey Ewing, CEO and Plan President for WellCare of Kentucky. “By investing in services like Owen County Public Transit and helping them expand their rural service area within the northern Kentucky region, we’re investing in improving the lives of our friends and neighbors in this region. For people who need access to medical care, like getting to their doctor or receiving treatment for a chronic condition, it literally can be a life-changing ride. WellCare of Kentucky is proud to support this service that has a significant impact on the quality of health and life for so many.”

WellCare of Kentucky provides managed care services through Medicaid and Medicare plans statewide as part of Centene Corporation.

Owen County Public Transit operates as an on-demand provider available throughout several counties and also acts as a subcontractor for regional Medicaid transport needs. More information about its services can be found at owencountyky.us/public-transit.

The Golden Triangle Rural Health Network collaborates with local hospitals and health centers based on a national model aimed at reducing health disparities by improving access to behavioral and physical healthcare.
