Last week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held a meeting with Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil in Washington. The two officials discussed the European Union’s planned support for Ukraine.

During the meeting, Secretary Bessent highlighted the Biden Administration’s position that Europe should take a more active role in increasing G7 pressure on Russia. According to the readout, “Secretary Bessent underscored the Administration’s expectation that Europe proactively increase G7 pressure on Russia.”

The discussion also addressed potential new sanctions on Iran. “Secretary Bessent went on to emphasize the United States’ desire to cooperate with Germany and European allies on additional sanctions on Iran following the UN snapback,” according to the statement.

The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to coordinate their responses to international security issues and economic measures.
