The Trump administration has halted almost $200 million in federal grants to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), funds that were allocated for science and health research. The decision was announced by the Justice Department and affects grants distributed through agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Governor Gavin Newsom responded to the announcement with a statement criticizing the move. “Freezing critical research funding for UCLA – dollars that were going to study invasive diseases, cure cancer, and build new defense technologies – makes our country less safe. It is a cruel manipulation to use Jewish students’ real concerns about Antisemitism on campus as an excuse to cut millions of dollars in grants that were being used to make all Americans safer and healthier. This is the action of a president who doesn’t care about students, Californians, or Americans who don’t comply with his MAGA ways,” Newsom said.

UCLA holds a strong reputation in higher education, having been ranked as the top public university in America by U.S. News & World Report (https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public).
