Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent held a meeting last week with Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois-Philippe Champagne in Washington. The discussion focused on U.S. trade concerns, with particular attention to imbalances in auto trade between the two countries.
During the meeting, Secretary Bessent addressed expectations for Canada to play a more active role in addressing these issues. He also called for Canada, together with Europe and the United Kingdom, to step up economic pressure on Russia through coordinated efforts within the G7.
Additionally, Secretary Bessent raised the need for a unified response to China’s global rare earth export controls and highlighted the importance of building diversified supply chains.
