USAA has announced that it has provided over $300 million in financial relief to more than 90,000 of its members affected by the ongoing government shutdown. The assistance includes loans, payment extensions, and waived fees as part of a support program aimed at military personnel and federal employees facing paycheck disruptions.
The organization, which serves over 14 million members, has extended its support initiatives through the next pay period and stated it will continue adapting its programs as circumstances evolve.
“We know the weight that uncertainty can bring, especially for those who serve,” said Michael Moran, President of USAA Federal Savings Bank. “That’s why we’re here—not just as a bank, but as a trusted and valued partner, ready to listen, guide and support you every step of the way.”
According to USAA’s data, approximately 82,000 loans have been issued totaling over $294 million. More than 11,100 consumer loan payment extensions have helped free up $15 million for immediate needs. Additionally, there have been over 7,600 credit card payment extensions amounting to $2.8 million and nearly 33,000 deposit accounts have had overdraft fees waived or refunded.
USAA is also providing guidance to help members manage their finances during the shutdown. Members are encouraged to prioritize essential expenses such as groceries and mortgage payments and consider withdrawing from savings before tapping into CDs or retirement accounts to avoid penalties. The association recommends contacting financial institutions early if payment difficulties arise and suggests using emergency savings when possible with the expectation of receiving back pay once the government reopens.
Beyond direct member assistance, USAA continues its support for military aid societies that offer emergency financial help and educational resources. Since 2016, USAA has contributed more than $40 million to these organizations.
