State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has published new data showing a slight decrease in animal collision claims in the United States. From July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, there were an estimated 1.7 million auto insurance claims related to animal collisions, down from 1.8 million the previous year. Deer were involved in over 1.1 million of these incidents.
The report highlighted that drivers nationwide had a 1 in 139 chance of being involved in an animal collision, which is an improvement from last year's odds of 1 in 128. West Virginia remains the state with the highest risk for such collisions, maintaining its position for over ten years with odds of 1 in 40.
Pennsylvania recorded the most industry claims at approximately 147,000, followed by Michigan with around 126,000 claims. Other states with high numbers include North Carolina (88,000), Texas (86,000), and Ohio (80,500). Despite these figures, all states reported a slight reduction in claims compared to the previous year.
Deer continue to be the most frequently struck animals, followed by unknown species, rodents—which are also noted for causing damage like chewing wires—dogs, and raccoons. The autumn months of October through December are particularly hazardous for animal-related collisions, accounting for about 650,000 incidents or roughly 41% of all claims during this period.
Conversely, Nevada has the lowest odds of animal collisions at 1 in 966. Hawaii and the District of Columbia follow closely behind with odds of 1 in 907 and 1 in 794 respectively.
State Farm advises drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant for animals on roadsides. It is important to brake firmly if an animal appears but avoid swerving to prevent more severe accidents.
In case of a collision involving an animal, drivers should move their vehicle safely off the road and contact authorities if necessary. Documenting the scene and assessing vehicle safety before driving further is recommended. Comprehensive insurance coverage typically includes repairs after such incidents once deductibles are met.
