NAMIC supports new bill targeting frivolous lawsuits

A new legislative proposal aims to curb frivolous lawsuits in federal courts, according to the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC). The Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act, introduced by Representative Mike Collins of Georgia, seeks to impose financial penalties on attorneys who file baseless lawsuits. This measure is intended to lower costs for consumers and businesses by reducing what NAMIC refers to as the "tort tax."

Jimi Grande, senior vice president of federal and political affairs for NAMIC, said that lawsuit abuse significantly raises the cost of products and services for American households. He emphasized that attorneys should be held accountable when they file meritless claims purely for profit. The proposed legislation would require offending lawyers to cover legal costs incurred by the opposing party and eliminate a grace period that currently allows them to withdraw such lawsuits without penalty.

Grande expressed support for the bill, stating it would alleviate financial burdens caused by excessive litigation and reduce congestion in the legal system. He also praised Congressman Collins' leadership on this issue and urged swift action from the House.
