California has begun a year-long celebration to mark its 175th anniversary of statehood. The commemorative events started in Sacramento, where First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and State Librarian Greg Lucas hosted a cake-cutting ceremony at the California State Library. This event highlighted the importance of libraries in fostering community and learning across the state.
The day continued with a public block party organized by California State Parks. The gathering featured music, food trucks, birthday cake, and activities led by State Parks staff. Volunteers dressed in historical costumes shared stories about Admission Day and the Capitol’s history with attendees.
The evening concluded with a laser show stretching from the State Capitol to Tower Bridge. Governor Gavin Newsom, Senate President pro Tem Mike McGuire, and Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas launched the display. The show was created by Tim Anderson of Nu-Salt Laser International and Ben Davis of Illuminate. Thirty-one Laser Space Cannons were used as a reference to California being the 31st state admitted to the Union.
The celebrations are set to continue throughout the year, with additional events planned statewide. More information is available at celebrate.ca.gov, where residents can find local activities and share their experiences using #CA175 on social media.
