California marked its 175th anniversary of statehood on September 9, with officials highlighting the state's achievements in technology, sports, agriculture, education, and diversity.
In a statement released from Sacramento, California’s leadership noted the state's long-standing role as a center for innovation. The release stated that one in four U.S. Nobel Prizes in science has been awarded to a California institution. It also emphasized that only the United States as a whole has more Nobel Prize winners than California.
The announcement described California as "the world’s sports capital," referencing its 1,307 Olympians since 1952 who have earned 945 medals. The state is home to 19 professional sports teams and several major upcoming sporting events: Super Bowls in 2026 and 2027, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the LA Olympics in 2028.
California's agricultural sector was recognized for producing nearly half of America’s fruits, vegetables, and nuts. The Central Valley was called one of the most productive agricultural regions globally.
Education leaders pointed to public universities such as the University of California system and California State University system as top contributors to research and workforce development. Community colleges were noted for providing skills-based training.
The state also highlighted its position in business and entrepreneurship with over four million small businesses and a tech sector valued at more than $1 trillion. According to officials, California hosts more Fortune 500 companies than any other region worldwide.
On artificial intelligence (AI) leadership, it was reported that California is home to 32 of the world’s top 50 private AI companies and produces about a quarter of global AI patents and publications.
Natural attractions were listed among California’s assets, including nine national parks—more than any other U.S. state—and well-known destinations such as Hollywood, Disneyland, Coachella Valley, Napa Valley wine country, and extensive coastal areas.
Officials described California's population as highly diverse: "No place in the world is more diverse. Cultures from every corner of the globe are represented in California, making us the most dynamic, inclusive, and forward-looking state in the nation."
