Governor Gavin Newsom has declared August 26, 2025, as “California Farmworker Day” in recognition of the significant role farmworkers play in the state’s agricultural industry and broader society.
In his proclamation, Newsom stated, “Farmworkers represent the best of California, embodying resilience, drive, and a deep love for their families and communities. The backbone of our state, farmworkers also strengthen our communities through wide-ranging contributions to society and the diverse heritage of our state. From landmark social movements to food, music, and art, this community is foundational to the prosperity and vitality of California as we know it.”
He highlighted that from Siskiyou County to the Imperial Valley, farmworkers’ efforts have made California the nation’s largest agricultural producer. Their labor ensures a consistent supply of fresh food across grocery stores and food banks nationwide. However, Newsom also noted challenges faced by these communities: “Despite this vital role, farmworker communities are being targeted by a hostile federal administration, indiscriminately terrorizing hard-working people.”
Newsom affirmed the state’s commitment to supporting agricultural workers: “California will not stand by while this happens – we are committed to supporting and uplifting our agricultural communities.” He pointed to recent measures including expanded homeownership opportunities for farmworkers, new resource centers, enhanced workplace protections and outreach efforts, additional labor rights enforcement offices in the Central Valley, expanded immigrant legal assistance and job training programs. The governor also referenced progress in extending health care access regardless of immigration status.
The proclamation paid tribute to historical leaders such as César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Larry Itliong for their advocacy on behalf of workers’ rights. “Today, we also reflect on the hard-won progress achieved by farmworkers and leaders like César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Larry Itliong,” Newsom said. He credited them with contributing significantly to civil rights advancements in California.
“We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the farmworkers at the heart and soul of California,” he added. “Today and every day let us celebrate and acknowledge the lives and contributions of California’s farmworkers and rededicate ourselves to extending the dream of prosperity and progress to all.”
Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attested to Governor Newsom’s signature on August 25th establishing this official recognition.
