GMG Insurance has announced on LinkedIn that new data indicates positive trends in Florida's homeowners insurance market, following years of instability.

According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, litigation against property insurers writing homeowner policies in Florida decreased by approximately 23% in 2024 compared to 2023—the lowest level since 2018. This decline follows reforms aimed at curbing frivolous lawsuits associated with Assignment of Benefits (AOBs) and other claim abuses, contributing to a more stable insurance environment. These regulatory changes appear to be easing the legal burden on insurers, potentially leading to greater market confidence among private carriers.

Reciprocal exchanges involve subscribers contributing premiums into a collective pool used to pay claims and manage expenses. This method fosters cost-sharing and financial solidarity across members. Financial surpluses are typically returned to policyholders as dividends or premium refunds, enhancing affordability compared to traditional, profit-driven insurers. Governance structures such as an advisory committee or board of governors ensure transparency and accountability, giving subscribers a meaningful voice in overseeing the attorney-in-fact and safeguarding the reciprocal’s long-term health.

Reciprocal exchanges must adhere to state insurance regulations, including minimum surplus requirements, financial reporting, and consumer protection standards. The model has gained renewed interest recently as investor-backed and stock insurance groups explore reciprocals for their flexible structure and member-aligned incentives, despite historically being uncommon relative to mutuals or stock insurers. This resurgence highlights how reciprocals can offer an adaptable alternative in markets seeking cost-effective, community-based underwriting models.
