Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong disapproval following the passage of President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Betrayal" by House Republicans. In a statement, Governor Newsom criticized the bill as detrimental to American society and a significant moral failure.

"This bill is a tragedy for the American people, and a complete moral failure," said Governor Newsom. "The President and his MAGA enablers are ripping care from cancer patients, meals from children, and money from working families — just to give tax breaks to the ultra-rich. With this measure, Donald J. Trump’s legacy is now forever cemented: he has created a more unequal, more indebted, and more dangerous America. Shame on him."

The legislation in question provides substantial tax cuts for wealthy Americans while reducing funding for essential programs that support ordinary citizens. The bill affects health care services, food assistance programs, public safety measures, and other critical services.

Governor Newsom highlighted specific impacts on California residents. The elimination of clean energy tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act threatens 686,000 jobs in California alone. Additionally, federal Medicaid funding reductions amounting to $28.4 billion could leave millions without health coverage by 2034.

Further cuts affect public safety agencies such as FEMA and the FBI with significant budget reductions potentially impacting their operational capabilities. Other areas impacted include wildfire prevention efforts and Planned Parenthood funding.

The governor also pointed out penalties imposed on owners of hybrid or electric vehicles as well as limitations placed on financial aid access for college students which could hinder educational opportunities.

Governor Newsom concluded by criticizing increased immigration enforcement actions funded by the bill which he argues unfairly target immigrant communities contributing positively to society.
