Governor Brian P. Kemp announced the establishment of a new pediatric medical research facility by Shriners Children's in Atlanta. This nonprofit pediatric specialty healthcare system will create 470 new jobs and invest over $153 million at its Science Square location.

“Shriners Children’s is an incredible addition to Georgia’s growing nonprofit, R&D, and life sciences communities,” stated Governor Kemp. He emphasized Georgia's appeal as a top state for talent and expressed gratitude for Shriners Children's decision to invest in the region.

The organization focuses on orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and cleft lip and palate while maintaining a strong commitment to education and research. Founded in 1922 by members of the Shriners International fraternity, it has treated nearly 2 million patients globally.

Dr. Leslie D. Stewart, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Shriners Children's, expressed enthusiasm about establishing the center in Georgia due to collaborative opportunities with institutions like Georgia Tech. Dr. Marc Lalande added that the institute will serve as an innovation hub for advancing children's healthcare through partnerships with Georgia Tech and Emory University.

Located at Science Square Labs near Georgia Tech's North Avenue Research Area, the institute will recruit talent across various fields including cell and gene therapies, robotics, artificial intelligence, medical devices, biologics, data informatics, administrative roles, and support roles.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens noted that this investment not only enhances Atlanta’s healthcare ecosystem but also reinforces its status as a global hub for public health advancements. Robb Pitts from Fulton County highlighted the project's contribution to high-quality job creation and economic growth in the region.

Katie Kirkpatrick from Metro Atlanta Chamber praised Shriners Children’s investment for strengthening Science Square's position as a center for AI and life sciences breakthroughs.

Project Director Jane Caraway represented the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Global Commerce team on this project along with partners like Invest Atlanta and Select Fulton.

GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson remarked that Shriners Children’s embodies their aim to attract world-class organizations that contribute positively to local communities while fostering job creation within Georgia’s life sciences sector.

Shriners Children’s continues its mission of providing innovative pediatric care alongside conducting impactful research aimed at improving patient lives worldwide. Further details can be found at shrinerschildrens.org.
