Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared June 2025 as "Immigrant Heritage Month" in California. This proclamation highlights the significant contributions of immigrant communities to the state, which is recognized as the world's fourth-largest economy.
In his statement, Governor Newsom emphasized the role immigrants play in various sectors such as education, innovation, public safety, and health. He stated that without the diverse ideas, heritage, and history brought by immigrants from around the world, California would not be what it is today.
The governor addressed current challenges faced by immigrants and their families due to indiscriminate immigration enforcement. He criticized rising hateful rhetoric across the nation and reaffirmed California's stance against divisive tactics based on falsehoods.
Governor Newsom pointed out that over 11 million immigrants reside in California. Almost half of all children in the state have at least one immigrant parent. Immigrants make up a third of the workforce and contribute significantly to entrepreneurship and tax revenues. In 2023 alone, immigrant households contributed $61.8 billion in state and local taxes.
The proclamation also highlighted that more than half of America's startup companies valued at $1 billion were founded by immigrants in 2022, with a significant portion located in Silicon Valley.
Newsom called for Congressional action to create a pathway to citizenship for long-standing community members who contribute positively to society.
Governor Newsom concluded by encouraging celebration of diversity during Immigrant Heritage Month while supporting economic well-being for shared prosperity across California.
