Georgia commissioner advises caution with fireworks ahead of July 4th

Commissioner King has issued a call for safety as Georgians prepare to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks. He emphasized the importance of caution, noting that "each year on the Fourth of July, fire departments throughout Georgia respond to a high volume of emergency calls related to firework accidents."

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks were responsible for eleven deaths and 14,700 injuries in 2024. This marks an increase of about 38% in deaths and 52% in injuries compared to the previous year.

Commissioner King advised several safety measures: read labels and follow directions, maintain a safe distance when lighting fireworks, avoid re-igniting malfunctioning ones, keep them away from children, never aim at people, steer clear of illegal or homemade versions, have water nearby, and avoid use under the influence.
