California grants $15M to boost tribal community economic growth

California has announced a $15 million grant initiative aimed at boosting economic growth in tribal communities. Governor Gavin Newsom, alongside the California Jobs First Council, disclosed that 14 Native American tribes and organizations will receive funding to support projects in job creation, business development, environmental protection, and research.

"This $15 million commitment recognizes that, since time immemorial, California tribes have been best aware of the opportunities and advantages of their regions and communities," stated Governor Newsom. "California is proud to partner with tribes across the state to support good jobs and expand economic opportunity in a meaningful and lasting way."

Tribal Affairs Secretary Christina Snider-Ashtari emphasized the potential for these grants to strengthen local economies: "Our tribal partners are uniquely positioned to grow their local communities and economies utilizing cultural values and principles of self-determination."

Projects funded include various local investments such as community centers and a bioenergy production facility. Notable allocations include $1.51 million for Berry Creek Rancheria of Maidu Indians for an energy plan, $587,000 for the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center's health sector program, and nearly $2 million for Owens Valley Career Development Center's clean economy career pathways.

Dee Dee Myers from GO-Biz highlighted the significance of these awards: "Each of these awards represents our efforts to invest in locally driven projects that will advance meaningful job creation."

The initiative is part of California Jobs First Economic Blueprint launched by Governor Newsom earlier this year, focusing on regional growth and innovation. Since 2022, California has invested $287 million in strategic sectors statewide.
