Governor Gavin Newsom has announced significant progress in California's efforts to combat organized retail crime. From January to May, the state's Organized Retail Crime Task Force conducted 331 investigations, resulting in 629 arrests and the recovery of 113,245 stolen items valued at nearly $6.5 million.

The task force, led by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and working with local law enforcement agencies, has been involved in over 3,800 investigations since its inception in 2019. These efforts have led to more than 4,400 arrests and the recovery of nearly 1.4 million stolen goods valued at over $58 million.

"In California, we value our public safety and back our business community," said Governor Newsom. "Organized retail crimes have no place in our society and I’m proud of the work our CHP officers do up and down the state to protect our families and communities."

The Governor highlighted that enforcement actions increased significantly from April to May due to tools made available through his organized retail crime package passed last year. In May alone, there were notable increases: investigations rose by 131%, arrests by 130%, recovered assets by 66%, and the value of recovered items by 49%.

During a national coordinated effort from May 26 to May 30, CHP operations across California resulted in the arrest of 90 individuals and recovery of nearly $153,000 worth of stolen merchandise. This operation was part of a broader initiative involving more than 100 law enforcement agencies across 28 states.

"Retail theft doesn’t stop at state lines—and neither do we," stated CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. "By working together with our law enforcement partners and retailers nationwide, we are sending a clear message: if you come to California to steal, we will be here to stop you."

These efforts underscore the importance of intelligence sharing and proactive enforcement in deterring retail theft. According to data from the Public Policy Institute of California, violent crime dropped by 4.6% while property crime decreased by 8.5% in California during 2024 compared to the previous year.

California has invested heavily in public safety since 2019 with $1.1 billion allocated for combating crime and improving local law enforcement capabilities. Last year saw an unprecedented investment aimed specifically at tackling organized retail crime as part of California’s Public Safety Plan.

Governor Newsom also signed significant bipartisan legislation last August targeting property crimes like smash-and-grab robberies and auto burglaries—efforts designed to adapt laws against evolving criminal tactics effectively holding perpetrators accountable.

In addition to legislative measures, financial support amounting to $267 million was distributed among communities last year enabling them hire more police officers increase arrests secure felony charges against suspects further bolstering fight against organized retail crime throughout state

As part regional initiatives focus saturating high-crime areas key regions such Bakersfield San Bernardino Oakland have seen over seven thousand three hundred arrests five thousand vehicles recovered three hundred fifty firearms confiscated
