As part of Governor Gavin Newsom's initiative to enhance state services, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has introduced an online renewal option for commercial driver's licenses (CDLs). This new service allows eligible CDL holders to renew their licenses up to 120 days before expiration without visiting a DMV office. The initiative aims to modernize DMV services by increasing the number of tasks that can be completed online.

Steve Gordon, Director of the DMV, stated, "Our commercial drivers keep California’s economy moving. This new online renewal service is another step in making DMV services faster, easier and available without a trip to the office."

The introduction of this online renewal service aligns with the Newsom Administration's efforts toward digital transformation through innovation and technology. Key benefits include secure customer information protection, convenience with multiple payment methods, and a paperless process where customers can upload necessary documents such as TSA clearance and medical exam records. Additionally, CDL holders have the flexibility to renew their licenses well in advance.

The DMV encourages customers to utilize its expanded digital services for various transactions that no longer require an office visit. These include driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers are advised to explore their options using the Service Advisor on the DMV website and can opt-in for paperless notices by creating an online account at dmv.ca.gov.
