In recognition of National Police Week, Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie Jr. has acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of law enforcement officers across various levels in Georgia. The observance runs from May 11 to May 17, 2025.

“Law enforcement officers faithfully and selflessly help to protect our families, friends, and neighbors while risking their own lives to safeguard the public,” said Moultrie. “We owe these men and women our gratitude and support for the dedication and bravery they display each day, often through unpublicized altruistic acts of service to the community.”

The tradition dates back to 1962 when former President John F. Kennedy first proclaimed Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to honor law enforcement officers for their service.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund's report, 148 officers died in the line of duty in 2024. In the Northern District of Georgia alone, seven officers lost their lives in service over the past year:

- Deputy Sheriff Brandon Tyler Cunningham from Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

- Investigator Taylor Jaimeson Bristow from Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

- Deputy Sheriff Eric Anthony Minix from Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

- Trooper Jimmy Cenescar from Georgia State Patrol.

- Police Officer Jeremy R. Labonte from Roswell Police Department.

- Trooper First Class Chase Winston Redner from Georgia State Patrol.

- Captain Helio Armando Garcia III from South Fulton Police Department.

The annual Candlelight Vigil by the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund will take place on May 13 at 8 PM, honoring those who have died in service. It will be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook.
