As California observes Wildfire Preparedness Week, Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the launch of a new AI-powered chatbot on CAL FIRE's website. The tool, named "Ask CAL FIRE," is designed to provide Californians with critical fire prevention resources and emergency information in 70 languages.

The chatbot offers quick and reliable answers to frequently asked questions using information from CAL FIRE’s website. It guides users to appropriate pages for more detailed information and provides real-time insights to CAL FIRE about the type of information residents are seeking.

Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “California is harnessing technology and innovation to help people when it matters most. Ahead of peak wildfire season, we’re launching a new chatbot that will connect Californians with real-time information and resources in the language they speak. This is yet another way we’re transforming government to better serve people.”

The tool aims to make accessing information simpler for those seeking guidance on home hardening strategies, defensible space advice, or updates on wildfire incidents over 10 acres across the state. It operates around the clock.

CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler emphasized the importance of timely information: “In an era of fast-moving wildfires, fast-moving information is essential. Tools like this help ensure Californians from all walks of life get the guidance they need to stay safe and informed.”

This initiative highlights CAL FIRE’s dedication to modernizing public communication tools and improving access to crucial wildfire preparedness data, emergency incidents updates, and career opportunities in fire service.

CAL FIRE continues its global leadership by employing technology such as AI, satellites, and more for efficient wildfire detection, projection, response, and suppression. Previously recognized by TIME magazine for its innovative use of AI in monitoring cameras throughout California for early wildfire detection, CAL FIRE collaborates with UC San Diego in these efforts.

California has also expanded its aerial firefighting capabilities with additions like night-time capable Fire Hawk helicopters. Despite managing only 3% of forestland while 57% is federally managed, California has completed or initiated over 2,200 projects on state land. Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, investments have increased tenfold enabling treatment of nearly 2 million acres.
