Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared May 2025 as "Older Californians Month." The proclamation highlights the significant contributions of nearly nine million older residents in California, emphasizing their impact on families, communities, and the economy. By 2030, projections indicate that one in four Californians will be aged 60 or older, with over one million expected to be 85 or older. Additionally, it is estimated that 28,388 people will reach the age of 100 or more by then.

The state is addressing these demographic changes through its Master Plan for Aging. Now in its fifth year, this ten-year plan aims to enhance inclusive policies and programs that align with shared priorities across California. Key areas include home and community care essential to both the economy and families; climate and disaster readiness; modernization of behavioral health systems with a focus on geriatric care; improved access to affordable healthcare including dementia prevention; and increased availability of affordable housing, transportation, and broadband.

Governor Newsom emphasized that all Californians should take pride in efforts made towards creating an inclusive environment for older adults and those with disabilities. He stated: "These efforts and our work to confront ageism and ableism are a key component of my Administration’s commitment to building an inclusive California for all."

This year's theme for Older Californians Month is "Flip the Script on Aging," which aims to change societal perceptions about aging by addressing stigma and stereotypes. The Master Plan for Aging seeks to ensure that all Californians have access to services enabling them to live independently where they choose.

The Governor's proclamation encourages celebrating the achievements of older Californians who contribute their knowledge, skills, and wisdom throughout various sectors in the state. It calls upon citizens to continue working towards a better future for all generations.

"NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 2025 as 'Older Californians Month,'" concluded Newsom.
