Marty Kemp First Lady of Georgia | Governor Brian Kemp Office of the Governor
Governor Brian P. Kemp has signed several pieces of legislation aimed at modernizing and improving public safety in Georgia. The signing event took place in Atlanta, with the presence of First Lady Marty Kemp, constitutional officers, members of the Georgia General Assembly, and law enforcement officers.
"All Georgians deserve to live in communities that are safe, and the way to accomplish that is by ensuring we have the best-trained, best-equipped law enforcement in the nation," stated Governor Kemp. He emphasized that these legislative measures provide necessary technology and support for law enforcement personnel.
The governor signed six bills:
- HB 105: Sponsored by Representative Will Wade and carried in the Senate by Senator Bo Hatchett, this bill increases indemnification benefits for public school employees from $75,000 to $150,000 in case of death. It also addresses notifications to disabled peace officers about relevant funds and compensation programs.
- HB 423: This bill facilitates the transition to Next Generation 911 to support first responders. It was sponsored by Representative Will Wade and carried in the Senate by Senator John Albers.
- HB 114: Sponsored by Representative Lauren McDonald and carried in the Senate by Senator Randy Robertson, this legislation updates reference dates for federal regulations.
- HB 116: Also sponsored by Representative Lauren McDonald and carried in the Senate by Senator Randy Robertson, it changes the name of a division within public safety to Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.
- HB 161: Sponsored by Representative Clint Crowe and carried in the Senate by Senator John Albers, this bill grants subpoena power to GBI for certain cybercrimes. It also includes updates on domestic terrorism statutes as advised by PAC.
- SB 185: Sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Randy Robertson and supported across party lines, this bill prohibits state funding for specific medical procedures for inmates.
