Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 4-10, 2025, as "Wildfire Preparedness Week" in California. This announcement follows the significant fires in Los Angeles earlier this year, highlighting the increasing climate challenges faced by the state.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of preparedness due to California's year-round fire season. He noted that two of the most destructive wildfires occurred in January, serving as a warning for future conditions. The state is actively working to enhance community resilience and forest health through historic investments and advancements.
Over recent years, California has increased its efforts in forest management and other initiatives aimed at reducing wildfire risks. CAL FIRE's budget has nearly doubled, and the state boasts one of the largest aerial firefighting fleets globally. Additionally, new regulations are being developed to create ember-resistant zones around structures in high-risk areas.
The governor highlighted that more than 2,200 fuels reduction projects are either completed or underway on state land. Nearly 2 million acres have been treated recently to slow down wildfires and provide safe zones for firefighting personnel. The focus remains on maintaining these projects and strengthening federal partnerships since only a small portion of California's forests are managed by the state government.
This year's theme for Wildfire Preparedness Week is "Building a Fire-Ready Future: Strengthening Our Defenses, Together." It stresses both collective efforts and individual responsibility in managing wildfire risks. Californians are encouraged to create defensible spaces around their homes, develop action plans, and participate in Fire Safe Councils.
Governor Newsom urged residents to visit ReadyForWildfire.org during Wildfire Preparedness Week to learn about preventive measures against wildfires. "Together," he stated, "we can create a more fire resilient California."
