Representative John Garamendi has introduced new legislation to create a National Rosie the Riveter Day, honoring women who supported the Home Front during World War II. The announcement was made on Friday during the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.

The bill, introduced with Representatives Jared Huffman, Kevin Mullin, Brian Fitzpatrick, Debbie Dingell, and Mark DeSaulnier, aims to honor the contributions of "Rosie the Riveters," women who played significant roles during the wartime efforts. The legislation aligns with both Women's History Month and Rosie the Riveter Day, observed annually on March 21.

Rep. Garamendi expressed his pride in commemorating the contributions of women during World War II, emphasizing the significant role played by the Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park in Richmond, where women contributed to the construction of more than 700 vessels.

"These dedicated women made countless contributions to their country while enduring gender and racial discrimination and harassment," Garamendi stated. He described the Rosies as "a testament to women’s empowerment and an inspiration to future generations."

Rep. Huffman praised the Rosies for redefining women’s roles in the workforce during the Second World War. "Decades later, they continue to inspire the generations who have followed in their footsteps," he said, highlighting the legislation as a means to honor their bravery and service.

Rep. Mullin acknowledged the sacrifices made by the women during World War II, stating that their legacy continues to inspire today's workforce. "I'm proud to co-lead the National Rosie the Riveter Day Act," he added.

Brian Fitzpatrick, who also co-leads the legislation, noted that the act follows his previous work awarding Rosies the Congressional Gold Medal, emphasizing the importance of celebrating their legacy on March 21.

Rep. Dingell described the Rosies as "true trailblazers," applauding their contributions to making lasting changes for women and girls in America. She expressed honor in co-leading the legislation to preserve their legacy.

Mark DeSaulnier expressed pride in participating in the legislation. He underscored the Rosies' commitment to gender equity and their lasting impact on the workforce.

Between 1940 and 1945, the percentage of women in the workforce increased significantly, with women taking on roles as riveters, welders, and other essential positions. This workforce was diverse, contributing greatly to meeting wartime demands in various sectors, including factories and shipyards.
