Garamendi opposes Trump's executive order on education, holds meetings with local leaders

Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) made a statement regarding President Donald Trump's recent executive order that dismantles the Department of Education. Garamendi criticized the order, describing it as an "illegal" and "unconstitutional overreach." He emphasized the negative repercussions that would follow if the order stands, citing potential rises in class sizes, teacher layoffs, cuts to special education, and higher college costs. He warned that key civil rights protections might be compromised, affecting many students nationwide.

Garamendi, who views the issue personally due to his family's connection to education, pledged to cooperate with House Democrats to contest the executive order in court and to work towards legislation that aims to bolster the American education system. "Our children’s future depends on it," he stated.

Garamendi held meetings with several regional leaders, including Fairfield Mayor Cat Moy, Suisun City Vice Mayor Dawson, Benicia Vice Mayor Macenski, Vallejo Vice Mayor Peter Bregenzer, and Solano County Administrator Bill Emlen. He also met Martinez Mayor Brianne Zorn, Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez, Pinole Cameron Sasai, and board members of the Green Empowerment Zone, as well as the Napa-Solano and Contra Costa Central Labor Councils.

These meetings followed two townhall events where over 1,000 constituents expressed their concerns and anxieties regarding the current administration's actions. Garamendi reassured attendees of the townhalls about his and House Democrats’ opposition to President Trump and Elon Musk's actions.
