Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the results of a joint law enforcement operation in San Bernardino, initiated in October 2024. The operation has led to 858 arrests, including 140 felony arrests, and the recovery of 66 stolen vehicles. Additionally, 28 illicit firearms have been seized.
The initiative aims to enhance public safety by deploying additional California Highway Patrol (CHP) personnel to combat property theft and violent crime, particularly gun violence. Special law enforcement units have been placed on the ground and in the air to target sideshow activities and vehicle theft.
Governor Newsom stated that these efforts are crucial for community safety: "As we continue prioritizing the safety and security of our communities statewide, the efforts done regionally in the San Bernardino area between state and local law enforcement are helping keep bad actors off the streets and holding them accountable for their actions."
On March 16, enhanced public safety measures allowed officers to arrest a suspect involved in a road rage incident on Interstate 10. The suspect had fired at another vehicle using a black semiautomatic handgun but was apprehended on the same day thanks to high-tech camera technology.
The camera network employed enables law enforcement agencies to identify vehicle attributes beyond license plate numbers. This allows CHP, local law enforcement, and allied agencies to track vehicles suspected of being linked to crimes and receive real-time alerts about their movements. Similar strategies have been implemented in other regions such as the Bay Area.
The operation is part of a broader strategy involving state, county, and city partnerships aimed at reducing roadway violence and criminal activity through increased CHP presence in high-crime areas. Governor Newsom's administration has extended similar support throughout California.
In August, significant bipartisan legislation was signed into law by Governor Newsom to address property crime with tougher penalties for repeat offenders. Since 2019, California has invested $1.1 billion towards crime prevention efforts including hiring more police officers and enhancing public safety infrastructure.
Under California’s Public Safety Plan announced in 2023, there has been an unprecedented investment aimed at combating organized retail crime across the state with a marked increase in proactive operations targeting such activities.
