The Nevada Division of Insurance has issued guidance for policyholders of Key Insurance Company following a Kansas court's decision to place the company into receivership. Key Insurance, which provides auto insurance policies to over 22,000 Nevada residents, is now prohibited from issuing new policies or renewing existing ones.
Policyholders are urged to find alternative coverage immediately to maintain continuous auto insurance. "The Nevada Division of Insurance is committed to ensuring consumers have the resources and information they need during this challenging time," stated Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper. He emphasized the importance of obtaining new coverage swiftly to comply with Nevada's auto insurance laws.
To assist affected consumers, the Division recommends working with local brokers and producers. Those facing difficulties in securing new coverage can contact the Nevada Division of Insurance at (888) 872-3234 or insinfo@doi.nv.gov for support. Additionally, individuals unable to find coverage through traditional means may reach out to the Western Association Automobile Insurance Plan at (800) 227-4659 for assistance.
Policyholders who attempted to renew their policies on or after March 4, 2025, and paid premiums should expect refunds processed through their original payment method without any action required.
To avoid penalties from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), affected policyholders should complete the DMV Smart Form if they experience a lapse in coverage due to nonrenewal by Key Insurance. The form can be accessed online and will help determine any applicable fines based on coverage gaps.
