Former CIO of Mohawk Industries sentenced for fraud

Jana Kanyadan, the former Global Chief Information Officer of Mohawk Industries, Inc., has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for defrauding the company. Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. commented on the case, stating that "Kanyadan held a position of authority as a C-suite executive at Mohawk and abused his fiduciary duty by stealing from the company that trusted him." He further noted that "His sentence is a reasonable one that reflects the seriousness of his criminal conduct."

FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown remarked on the investigation: "The defendant stole money that should have gone to his employer. We will continue to investigate and hold accountable anyone who attempts to scam their employer out of funds."

According to court documents, Kanyadan was responsible for IT services and decisions at Mohawk. In 2019, when Mohawk began a significant IT project, Kanyadan secretly organized Meta Technology Platforms, LLC and used it as a vendor for Mohawk's outsourced work. Between May 7 and October 2, 2022, Meta Tech invoiced Mohawk approximately $3 million without disclosing Kanyadan’s involvement. These invoices included charges for unperformed services and software not provided.

As a result of these fraudulent activities, Mohawk paid Meta Tech around $1.86 million, with over $820,000 stemming from fraud. Kanyadan was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Additionally, he must pay a $250,000 fine and restitution amounting to nearly $1 million.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted this case's investigation while Assistant U.S. Attorney Samir Kaushal and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Tal C. Chaiken handled prosecution duties.
