Governor Gavin Newsom has announced significant changes to his executive staff, appointing Nani Coloretti as the new Cabinet Secretary. This transition follows the decision of Ann Patterson, the outgoing Cabinet Secretary, to step down after six years in the role. Patterson will continue to serve as Senior Counselor to Governor Newsom, focusing on recovery initiatives for Los Angeles.
Expressing gratitude for Patterson's service, Newsom stated, “I am profoundly grateful for Ann’s guidance over these last six years — helping me navigate some of the most meaningful, as well as the most challenging, moments of my governorship.” He also praised her willingness to assist during Los Angeles' recovery period.
In welcoming Coloretti, Newsom highlighted her extensive experience in government policy: “During this transition, I am thrilled to welcome Nani as she steps into this critical role. Nani’s decades of experience navigating complex policy issues at all levels of government make her uniquely qualified to lead our cabinet in continuing to deliver bold solutions to improve the health, well-being, and safety of all Californians.”
Coloretti brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles in federal government agencies. She served as Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Joe Biden and held senior positions at both the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Her career also includes playing a crucial part in establishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Patterson's tenure saw her guide California through numerous challenges such as natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her contributions included advancing various state initiatives like PAGA reform and implementing universal free school meals for children in California.
Coloretti's appointment does not require Senate confirmation. She holds degrees from University of California, Berkeley and University of Pennsylvania. Similarly, Patterson's new position as Senior Counselor is not subject to Senate confirmation.
