Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a statement in response to the Trump administration's announcement of releasing over $315 million for water storage projects in California. The funds are allocated for the future Sites Reservoir and the existing San Luis Reservoir.
Newsom expressed gratitude, stating, "We are grateful for this shared priority with the Trump Administration as we move forward together to build critical infrastructure to improve water storage."
The Sites Reservoir is designed to capture water during wet seasons and store it for drier periods. It will have a capacity of up to 1.5 million acre-feet, sufficient to supply more than 4.5 million homes annually. The project has already received $46.75 million in early state funding and is eligible for $875.4 million from Proposition 1 funding. The total cost of the project is estimated at $4 billion.
Governor Newsom streamlined the project last year by overcoming a CEQA legal challenge and maintaining that victory on appeal. The current funding was awarded during the Biden administration but released by President Trump today.
