California's proactive approach to managing emergency resources ahead of a major storm this week has been praised for its effectiveness in saving lives and preventing significant damage. Governor Gavin Newsom commended the state's advanced planning and strategic pre-deployment of resources, which resulted in only minor debris flows and no major structural damage or injuries.

The California National Guard played a crucial role by clearing debris basins near burn scars before the storm. They removed 298,335 cubic yards of debris from the Sierra Madre Villa Basin and Eaton Canyon Reservoir, effectively protecting homes from potential debris runoff.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Watershed and Debris Flow Task Force deployed over 120 miles of protective measures to safeguard vulnerable communities. "In the face of another severe weather event, California once again demonstrated the power of preparation," said Governor Newsom. "Our pre-storm efforts saved lives and kept our communities safe."

Resources were pre-deployed across 20 counties, leading to successful life-saving operations:

- In Los Angeles County, urban search and rescue teams responded to 12 flood-related incidents.

- In Orange County, swiftwater rescue teams rescued two individuals with the help of a helicopter.

- In San Bernardino County, multiple unhoused individuals were rescued along HWY 330.

- In Riverside County, rescues included an individual with two dogs clinging to a tree.

- In Mendocino County, Caltrans and State Parks personnel assisted in a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue.

Cal OES deployed various resources across several counties including fire engines, bulldozers, helicopters, hand crews, swiftwater rescue teams, sandbags, and super sacks. The ALERTCalifornia wildfire and disaster monitoring system provided real-time data that was instrumental during the storm.

"The close coordination between state, local, and federal partners played a critical role in protecting lives and property," stated Cal OES Director Nancy Ward. She emphasized the importance of vigilance as climate change brings more severe weather patterns.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through emergency alerts and follow evacuation plans as necessary.
