Arrests made in Talbot County arson investigation involving former sheriff

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced the arrests of three individuals in connection with an arson investigation in Talbot County. Former Talbot County Sheriff Justin "Jake" Johnson, 37; Wallace Copeland, 63; and Jimmy Buchanan, 72, were taken into custody following a multi-agency probe.

The State Fire Marshal's Office was called to investigate a residential fire on Turkey Roost Lane in Shiloh, Georgia, which occurred on November 3, 2023. The arrests took place on January 31, 2025. Each suspect faces two counts of arson and one count of conspiracy to commit arson.

The case involved collaboration with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Assistance during the arrests was provided by the Georgia State Patrol, Harris County Sheriff's Office, Meriwether County Sheriff's Office, and Manchester Police Department.
