People in Los Angeles affected by the recent wildfires may now qualify for new food benefits, according to an announcement from Governor Gavin Newsom. The Disaster CalFresh program offers a one-time $975 food benefit to families of four with a monthly income up to $3,529. Eligibility extends to those who lived or worked in fire-affected areas of Los Angeles County on January 7, 2025.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of supporting impacted individuals and families: “California’s response and recovery efforts will continue to be guided by the needs of people throughout the impacted region. My administration is focused on serving the individuals and families who need our help the most, which means creating new and expanded benefit programs."
First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom added, “No family should have to worry about how they’re going to put food on the table, especially during a crisis. D-CalFresh food benefits will help ensure that those most in need have access to critical assistance."
CalHHS Secretary Kim Johnson stated that her agency is committed to assisting those affected by these historic wildfires.
The program targets several ZIP codes within Los Angeles County. Applicants must meet certain criteria related to financial losses due to the fires or power outages. Applications are open between February 10-14 and February 18-19, 2025.
Additionally, California has obtained waivers allowing CalFresh recipients in affected regions to purchase hot foods until February 8, 2025. Affected individuals can also request replacement benefits for lost food purchased with CalFresh funds through February 5, 2025.
Emergency reserve funding of $1 million has been released by California for emergency food boxes and potable water distribution in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
